Stanton real estate transaction [added April 27, 2012]
I located a deed at the Washington County (NY) County Clerk's Office, dated June 17, 1874, which conveys property from Thomas and Emily Brice of Sandy Hill to Margaret A. Stanton of Moreau. The property is in Sandy Hill, and Mrs. Stanton paid $1,500 for it. Margaret's husband, Philip, is not listed on the deed. Thomas Brice is probably the same one who had purchased the Stantons' property in Moreau on June 7, 1874. Note that in my book, I give the name as Thomas Price, based on my reading of the record for that transaction at the Saratoga County Clerk's Office, but in light of this new information, I'm sure I misread the handwriting.
Yet to be explained is why Mrs. Stanton alone was the purchaser of the Sandy Hill property. Her husband is listed in the 1875 New York State Census, so he was not deceased at the time of this transaction.
Correction [added February 8, 2012]
On page 72, the text incorrectly states that Elizabeth was living in Moreau in 1860. It should have said "Glens Falls." The citation to a census page for the Town of Queensbury (which included Glens Falls) is correct, however.
Ann Northup and Stantons in 1875 [added February 8, 2012]
Last fall I spent hours going through online images of
pages from the 1875 New York State Census, trying
to find where Solomon Northup's wife, daughter, and
son-in-law were living at that time. I went through all
the pages for Saratoga Springs, Moreau, Glens Falls,
and Fort Edward but did not find them.
At the end of the year, familysearch.org added searchability to their database, and I was able to find the Stantons in Kingsbury (in Washington County), with Ann (listed as Anna) living with them.
